DiSalvo and Davies to race for Triumph

Former AMA racers join factory World Supersport team

Triumph’s factory World Supersport team will feature a pair of AMA racing alumni.

American Jason DiSalvo and British racer Chaz Davies were officially introduced by the ParkinGO Triumph Factory Team. DiSalvo and Davies will ride Triumph Daytona 675 race bikes prepared by the BE1 Racing team. BE1 Racing will enter its own riders, David Salom and two-time World Supersport Champion Sebastien Charpentier.

DiSalvo, from Batavia, N.Y., raced the previous eight seasons in the U.S. Most recently, DiSalvo finished fifth in the Daytona Sportbike standings with six podium appearances for M4 Suzuki. In 2008, DiSalvo finished third in the AMA Superbike championship for the Yamaha factory team, behind only Mat Mladin and Ben Spies. DiSalvo has European racing experience, having competed in the British 125cc championship.

“I’m honored to be considered by the ParkinGO Triumph Factory Team and to ride for them in world supersport,” says DiSalvo. “I’ve followed the series over the years and have had my eye on the Triumph for some time now and it looks like an awesome machine. It’ll be a good challenge, I’ve never ridden it before and it’ll be interesting to see what it’s like. People always asked me why I didn’t go and race in Europe before, but I didn’t want to unless it was in a top-level team. Now I am and I’m really pumped to be going.”

DiSalvo will be joined by Davies, the first British rider to win the Daytona 200. Davies joined the Triumph squad near the end of the 2009 season, earning a fourth-place finish in his debut race at Imola. Before joining the Triumph team, Davies finished ninth in the 2009 Daytona Sportbike standings with a second-place finish at Laguna Seca for the factory Aprilia team. Though he is only 22 years old, Davies has several years of international racing experience, having raced in the 125cc, 250cc Grand Prix series as well as a few races in MotoGP in 2007.

“I love working with this team and am really motivated for the coming season. We’ve not won races yet, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t do so this season,” says Davies. “We’ve already had a rigorous test in Valencia and have two more big tests planned in Portugal and Australia before the first race. I know Jason from my time racing in the States and I am sure that together we will make a good team.”

With Davies, DiSalvo, Charpentier and Salom on its roster, BE1 Racing has cut ties with racer Garry McCoy. The BE1 Racing had been negotiating with McCoy, who earned a couple of podium appearances for the team in 2009. According to BE1 Racing, McCoy left the team by mutual consent.

“I’m very sorry that Garry McCoy and my team didn’t reach an agreement, and I thank him for his determination and expertise, and for the good results achieved in 2009,” says Giuliano Rovelli, owner of BE1 Racing. “I do wish Garry all the best for his career in the future. Anyway, I’m fully satisfied with this new team in the Supersport World Championship. We have three young talented riders and one very skilled world champion, all of them extremely motivated in doing their best.”

McCoy however has a different view on the negotiations. The Australian rider issued a statement saying he was “absolutely shocked” after Rovelli unilaterally ended negotiations.

“This was going to be my third year with Triumph and amongst everything; it was going to be the greatest season for each and every person who has bet on Triumph’s project,” McCoy says in his statement, before promising to appear at the upcoming test in Portimao, Portugal. “My loyalty to Triumph will prevail.”
