New 400-class sportbike to be revealed Sept. 7

Aprilia has posted teasers across its official international websites and various social media channels for a new sportbike. Based on what little can be seen from the teaser image, it looks to be a smaller-displacement version of the RS 660 to compete against the likes of the KTM RC 390, Yamaha YZF-R3 or Kawasaki Ninja 400. While many are assuming it will be called the RS 440, Motorcycle.com can confirm it will actually be called the Aprilia RS 457.

The teaser itself doesn’t reveal very much in the way of detail. The front end shows hints of the a shared DNA with the RS 660 and RSV4, as does the black and red color scheme. The shape of the fuel tank looks a bit flatter than the RS 660’s tank, and the seat has more of a curve to its silhouette. The tail also looks less angular than its larger counterparts.

As for the name, Aprilia is making the unusual step by not having a nice, evenly rounded number, and going with RS 457 instead. We suspected Aprilia was adopting the 457 number when we noticed it in the filenames for the teaser photo on Aprilia’s website. Our suspicions grew when we noticed the teaser page on Aprilia India’s website is https://apriliaindia.com/aprilia-rs-457.

But the biggest giveaway is a new trademark filing Piaggio filed in Italy on July 20 for a RS 457 logo:

According to Aprilia’s Instagram posts (including one from the Aprilia Americas account), the RS 457 will be revealed on Sept. 7.
