The California Air Resources Board has granted its approval for the Piaggio MP3 300 Hybrid scooter, opening it up for sale in California.

The world’s first production hybrid has been available in Europe since 2009 but the Piaggio MP3 Hybrid’s North American debut had been stalled by the homologation process. The wait may soon be over, now that the hybrid three-wheeler has jumped the CARB hurdle.

Even better news is the fact it’s the 278cc version that has gained approval. Earlier reports had Piaggio importing only the 125cc version instead.

The Piaggio MP3 300Hybrid can run in both electric-only mode or in hybrid mode with the electric engine assisting the 278cc gasoline-powered engine.

Expect the Piaggio MP3 300 Hybrid to arrive in U.S. dealerships later this year as a 2012 model.
