Smith named 2010 AMA VMD Grand Marshal

Hall of Famer shares long history with Marque of the Year Husqvarna
By Motorcycle.Com Staff, Feb. 16, 2010
Hall of Famer Malcolm Smith has been named Grand Marshal for the 2010 AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days.

The off-road racing champion and star of On Any Sunday is an apt choice for Grand Marshal, given his history with the 2010 events Marque of the Year, Husqvarna. Smith was brought on by Husqvarna importer Edison Dye to race the Swedish-made machine.

Even today, decades after Malcolm Smith's racing prime, his fan base rivals some of the top names in the sport, says Rob Dingman, AMA president and chief executive officer. To anyone who has met him, the reason for that is clear: Malcolm Smith is synonymous with everything positive about motorcycling fun, sportsmanship, and excitement. He will serve as an exceptional Grand Marshal at this years AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days as we celebrate the brand on which he became famous: Husqvarna.

Smith found success with Husqvarna, winning a silver medal at the 1966 International Six Days Trials (now known as the International Six Days Enduro). Smith went on to win seven gold medals in Six Days competition as well as the Baja 1000 with Husqvarna.

Baja 1000 winner, "On Any Sunday" star and Hall of Famer Malcolm Smith was also one of the industry's most outspoken voices against the CPSIA lead ban.
When Edison Dye brought me the bike, we laid out a track and some trail that went up into the hills, says Smith. When I came back from that ride, I said, Mr. Dye, you have yourself a rider. The bike was so far ahead of anything else available at the time, and so reliable.

Smith will take part in several activities during Vintage Motorcycle Days, from autograph signings to discussions about his history with Husqvarna.

I was last at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days three years ago and had a wonderful time, says Smith. I particularly liked walking around the large field where they sell all the old bike parts, buying a truckload and then figuring out how to get it all back to California. Im spoiled. I like to ride new bikes, but I really enjoy working on old motorcycles. I work on them every day.

The 2010 AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days will take place July 9-11 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio. The highlight will be the events traditional swap meet. Other events include educational seminars, bike shows, demo rides and the product manufacturers midway.

Proceeds from AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days will support the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum in Pickerington, Ohio.
