Villopoto wins inaugural LA Supercross round

Ryan Villopoto continued his red-hot start to the 2011 AMA Supercross season with his second win in three races.

The Monster Energy Kawasaki racer won the main event in the AMA Supercross Championship’s debut at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles before an audience of 41,107 fans. Villopoto also won the season opener in Anaheim, Calif., and finished second at round two in Phoenix, Ariz.

Villopoto appears to be back in the form he showed in the 2010 season before breaking his leg at the April 17, 2010 St. Louis round. Before St. Louis, Villopoto had won seven of his prior 10 races.

“It’s great to be able to be the first winner at this event,” says Villopoto. “This race didn’t start out the greatest for me and I had to work my way up. The track was a little tricky because moisture started to come up and you really had to be smart. It’s nice to come back after finishing second last week. It feels really good.”

The L.A. race began with Rockstar Makita Suzuki racer Brett Metcalfe taking the holeshot ahead of teammate and defending champion Ryan Dungey. GEICO Honda’s Kevin Windham was third after the first lap but soon gave up that spot to San Manuel Yamaha’s James Stewart.

Metcalfe crashed on the second lap, allowing Dungey to take the lead with Stewart challenging in second. Stewart would soon take the lead and hold onto it for eight laps before crashing on lap ten.

Stewart’s slip-up allowed Villopoto to move into the lead for good, winning the 20-lap race by 4.681 seconds. Stewart lost a couple of positions on his crash but was able to pass first American Honda’s Trey Canard and later Dungey to finish second.

“I got into the lead and then Ryan ran into me, and it was like, ‘All right, let’s go ...’ and then I just came into a corner and washed the front end out,” says Stewart. “I’m very, very, very disappointed with this one. I just threw it away. I feel bad for my team because we’ve been working hard and you can’t win them on the ground. This won’t happen again.”

Dungey finished third to maintain a two-point lead over Canard for third place in the championship standings. Though the defending champion is still looking for his first win of the 2011 season, Dungey says he was happy about the L.A. round.

“I’m happy about the day,” said Dungey. “Winning the heat race was definitely a step in the right direction. In the Main, I got a good start on my RM-Z450 and we had to battle pretty much all race long – it was kind of cat and mouse. Overall, happy on the day; we just came up a little short. My Rockstar Makita Suzuki team and I accomplished a lot, so we can’t complain about anything. I’m definitely looking forward to Oakland and going to another new stadium. We’ll do some work this week and show up to Oakland ready to go.”
