AMA-SX: 2011 Daytona Results

Villopoto extends points lead
By Motorcycle.Com Staff, Mar. 08, 2011
Ryan Villopoto took advantage of a James Stewart crash to win the Daytona round of the 2011 AMA Supercross Championship.

For the second week in a row, Villopoto was the main beneficiary of a Stewart crash. At the Atlanta, Ga., round, Stewart crashed with rival Chad Reed twice on the final lap, allowing Villopoto to move into the lead from third place. The Monster Energy Kawasaki racer didnt have to wait as long in the Daytona main.

Stewart had a blazing start, taking the holeshot and building a lead of over six seconds. The San Manuel Yamaha rider made a mistake on a takeoff on the third lap and was thrown over the handlebars. Villopoto, running in second at the time, was able to take advantage and take the lead. He would hold on the rest of the 20-lap race for the win.

I got a good start right behind James and just followed him, says Villopoto. He was on it those first couple of laps. I was just riding my pace, my race. I figured I was either going to stay where I was and he was just going to do what he was going to do or he was going to go down.

Kevin Windham (14), Ryan Dungey (1) and Ryan Villopoto (2) fight for position t the Daytona round of the 2011 AMA Supercross Championship.

Stewart was able to remount and though he lost a lap to the leaders, was able to finish in ninth.

I totally didnt expect to wheelie into the face of that jump. I can live with it because I dont feel like I did anything wrong, says Stewart. Ill never quit. Its not about how hard you go down, its about how hard you fight when you get up. I am a little sore now but fine and I have to say a big thank you to the fans; they gave me a standing ovation at the end of the race.

Second place went to Reed of TwoTwo Motorsports Honda while reigning AMA Supercross Champion Ryan Dungey of Rockstar Makita Suzuki finished third.

With his win, Villopoto extends his lead in the championship to 23 points. Stewart was able to salvage 12 points from his ninth-place finish to remain in second place, just a point ahead of Reed.

The 2011 AMA Supercross Championship continues March 19 at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla.
