The Monster Energy Kawasaki racer almost didnt make it to the main event, crashing out of his heat race. Villopoto managed to get in through the last chance qualifier before 60,019 fans at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
Davi Millsaps of Honda Red Bull Racing took the holeshot with Kevin Windham of Geico Powersports Honda on his tail. Despite starting from the outside, Villopoto had a strong start, emerging in third after the first corner. The two Honda riders passed the lead between them during the opening laps before Windham got the advantage by lap three.
Villopoto overtook Millsaps by lap five and Rockstar Makita Suzuki s Ryan Dungey joined him in the front three by lap seven.
Halfway through the 20-lap race, Villopoto began to pressure Windham and soon came out ahead by lap 11. Dungey, who held the championship lead going into Indianapolis, also powered past Windham a lap later to claim second place. The three riders would hold those positions through the rest of the race with Villopoto in first, Dungey 3.6 second behind and Windham 20 seconds back in third.
With the win, Villopoto is tied for first in the standings with Dungey at 145 but holds the advantage with three wins to Dungeys two. San Manuel Yamaha s Josh Hill, who was tied with Dungey for the points lead going into the race, dropped down to third with a ninth-place finish in Indianapolis.
