Electric Scooters Update

A MOridian named J. Nichols writes in: "Wanted to know if there was any update on the 12/18/95 article which promised a 500 mile range 50mph electric scooter.

ELECTRIC VEHICLES ONE STEP NEARER BY ACCIDENT
A Japanese scientist, Yasunori Takahashi of Sciex Corporation, claims to have developed an electricscooter that will run for 500 miles at 50mph on just four car batteries -- using motors built with hisown new technology. The technology was discovered by accident, after a mistake in the lab that may bethe biggest accident in scientific research since the discovery of Penicillin.

Huh? did we write that? Who reads this old stuff anyway? It's fairly common knowledge that MO also owns bicycle.com and has been threatening to launch BO (but who wants to work for a company called B-O?), so we're all pretty two-wheeled gung-ho here and think anything with less than four wheels is cool.

Electric scooters seem like a great idea to us, but we haven't followed the genre much -- the Iaccoca electric bicycles thing never really tickled our fancy, but with dwindling oil supplies, this has to be a hot seller within 15 or 20 years. Then again, we thought the 1995 GPz1100 would be a hot seller, so what the heck to we know?

Anyway, and here's the point of this diatribe, anyone know anything about electric scooters? The niche seems to have lost momentum with the advent of hybrid cars...
