The Skinny on Skinny Tires...

I have a "classic" 1985 Honda Nighthawk CB700SC with a 130 series rear tire. I would like to go a little wider (140 series). The trouble is, I have one "certified" mechanic saying it's okay to go one size wider and another "certified" mechanic saying it's dangerous. Will going wider result in poor handling, or is this just "risk management" so the tire installers/manufacturers won't get sued? Does tire size really matter?
