For sale: ten-foot Honda trike
The three-wheeled Thunderous Cyclops is the brainchild of builder Clifford Smith. A replica of the 1987 Honda ATC trike, the Cyclops took Smith a year and a half to build.
Smith used 66-inch tires, three times the size of the 22-inch tires used in the original 1987 ATC, as a reference to determine the size of the entire replica. The frame is made of four and five-inch drill pipe and weighs about a ton. It had been stress relieved at 1,100 degrees Fahrenheit in an oven at Odessa, Texas. The bodywork is made of fiberglass.
To complete the illusion, the Cyclops comes with a 15-foot inflatable rider. The actual driver sits in a compartment hidden between the blow-up mans legs. An on-board TV allows the driver to see in front of the Cyclops from a camera hidden in the giant headlight composed of nine halogen lights.
The Thunderous Cyclops is just one of the rare and unusual vehicles available at the Worlds Greatest Collector Car Event, an automotive lifestyle event organized by the Barrett-Jackson Auction Company. The auction house has previously produced the Worlds Greatest Collector Car Events in Scottsdale, Ariz. and Palm Beach, Fla.
Barrett-Jackson has broadened the definition of a collector vehicle over the years, says Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson. We were the first to embrace muscle cars, hot rods and customs. Now, the unusual vehicles we sold, like Robosaurus and the Monster Garage cars, have opened a new genre that will expand in Las Vegas.
Other vehicles taking part in the Las Vegas event include car racing legend Carroll Shelbys first race car, a 1949 MG TC. General Motors will auction 20 vehicles at the event as part of the companys 100th anniversary celebrations.
