The Rockstar Makita Suzuki racer was tied for the point lead with Monster Enerrgy Kawasaki's Ryan Villopoto when the series arrived at the Georgia Dome, but Villopoto held the advantage in wins.
In the main event in Atlanta, however, Dungey burst out of the starting gate to take the holeshot with Red Bull Honda's Trey Canard and Villopoto behind him. Dungey soon pulled away, leaving Canard and Villopoto to battle for second.
Villopoto moved ahead of Canard by the third lap and began to close on Dungey until he crashed hard on lap ten.
I was going triple-triple through that section and came up on a lapper, says Villopoto. I had to change my line and I ended up casing the jump. That sent me over the bars. Worse than that though was the silencer filled with dirt and I couldnt get the bike restarted. It wouldnt have been too bad if I could have got going right away. I wasnt hurt at all.
With Villopoto out, Dungey went unchallenged the rest of the race to claim his third win and the top spot in the standings.
I got a great start, which put me in a good position, says Dungey. Its really enjoyable when the win happens. It doesnt always go your way, so when it does you have to be very thankful for it.
Canard finished second for his career-best premiere class result while his teammate Davi Millsaps finished behind him for the final podium position.
The 2010 AMA Supercross Championship continues March 6 in Daytona, Fla. on a track designed by Ricky Carmichael. Dungey leads the standings with 170 points followed by San Manuel Yamaha's Josh Hill at 150 points. Villopoto was able to recover from his crash to finish 19th and earn two points to sit third overall with 147 points. Millsaps sits fourth with 134 points.
