BMW announced it will reveal five new motorcycles on Oct. 22 at noon EST/9 am PST across its social media channels. BMW only offered two clues about the five models: they will all be what BMW calls its “Heritage world”, and at least one will be an R18 model based on the engine photo accompanying the news.
Thanks to certification data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, we expect the five new models to be an R18 Classic, the R NineT, R NineT Pure, R NineT Scrambler and R NineT Urban G/S. Conspicuously absent is the R NineT Racer which may be dropped from the 2021 model year.
We suspect the R18 Classic will a bagger version of the R18. Back in February, we published designs of the R18 filed with Brazil’s patent office revealing the 1800cc cruiser and a bagger version with a large fairing and hard cases. We noted at time the wide digital display on the bagger design, and we now know it is likely the same 10.25″ color TFT screen that recently debuted on the 2021 R1250RT.
Spy photographers have also spotted a R18 prototype with a tall windscreen instead of a fairing, and that may be a possibility as well. The faired design may be a likelier candidate, however, as it was filed at the same time as the cruiser design.
As for the R NineT models, we’re sure Sean Matic will be disappointed if the Racer version does get dropped. Based on EPA certification data, the R NineT engine will remain at its 1170cc displacement. The EPA data does show a slight drop in power output, listing the 2021 engine at 107.3 hp at 7250 rpm compared to the 2020 engine’s listed 108.6 hp at 7750 rpm, but it also produces fewer emissions than the 2020 version, which should help it meet Euro 5 standards.
