Four years ago, said Claudio Domenicali the CEO, Ducati launched its first Scrambler at Intermot here in Koln, which was really like starting a new brand for Ducati. A brand to make Ducati more accessible, and a really successful one so they say, with more than 55,000 units sold since 2015.
Since then they’ve been introducing two new Scramblers a year, but for 2019 I count four. The first one would be the Icon Ryan rode a couple of weeks ago. The three new models get all the improvements of that bike – the hydraulic clutch, the cornering ABS, the other things. Domenicali makes the point that people who don’t know what cornering ABS is, like many Scrambler newcomers, are the ones who probably need it most. Smart man.
Other updates include new headlights with daytime running light, updated switchgear for improved ergonomics and a revised hydraulic clutch that offers a softer feel.
After the obligatory hipster video, Ducati unveiled:
Scrambler Cafe Racer, with a sweet blue frame, spoked wheels, and inspiration by the 125 Grand Prix Desmo of yore. Features include aluminum bar-end mirrors, 17-inch spoked wheels, small fairing and a stubby fender, giving it a ’60s cafe feel. The number 54 is in honor of former Ducati race Bruno Spaggiari.
Scrambler Desert Sled, with a 19/17 wheel combination and Domenicali’s testimonial that this one underwent serious testing and will walk the walk as well as talk the talk. The Desert Sled comes with an off-road riding mode that disables ABS for when you want to take it out in the dirt.
