As the the largest supplier of original equipment and replacement motorcycle tires in the U.S.A., Dunlop wants to give back by giving away a brand new Harley-Davidson Roadster to a deserving first responder or healthcare worker. Surely everybody can get behind that? Entry rules below.
Yamaha announced a redesigned WR450F for 2021 along with a returning WR250F. They join the previously announced YZ450FX, YZ250X, YZ250FX and YZ125X in Yamaha’s 2021 cross country lineup.
BMW announced a new drive chain design that it claims requires as little maintenance as a shaft drive. The M Endurance chain will initially be offered in 525 pitch as an accessory or a factory option for the BMW S1000RR and S1000XR, before eventually being offered for other BMW models.
Experts feared the Rally would be a “superspreader event,” according to this CNN report, but 70 reported coronavirus cases so far out of a reported 460,000 vehicles-worth of attendees doesn’t seem too super. The last official day of the rally was ten days ago, Sunday, August 16. On the other hand, if you were paying attention you may have noticed how quickly one Covid case became 5.8 million in the United States in about five months. Sturgis neatly coincided with a reported uptick in infections across rural parts of the Midwest.
That’s 2151 cubic centimeters to you and me, and maybe the biggest engine out there after the Triumph Rocket 3, no? That’s 14 ci bigger and/or 234 cc larger than the biggest M8 you can get in any production Hog. It’s good for 135 ft-lb of torque and 124 HP at the rear wheel, says Harley, when paired with Screamin’ Eagle Street Cannon mufflers. A nice little upgrade to your 2018 and later Softails that came with a M8.
If you’re wondering why Yamaha eBikes and various others occasionally crop up in the pages of MO, there’s your answer. The growth in sales began before the pandemic, but accelerated sharply in March as people began looking for safer, healthier ways to get around. It’ll be curious to see if any of these people, newly exposed to assisted two-wheel propulsion, might someday graduate onto a motorcycle? A nice electric one, perhaps? Air garments are all the rage lately, and for good reason. If this new HELITE Free-Air Vented Jacket works as good as the Alpinestars air vest we “tested” a couple days ago (more on that to come…), you’ll be glad you spent the money should you find yourself flying through the air without an airplane.
The hep spot where Londoners meet to peruse and schmooze over all things moto will be opening a new 30,000-square foot outlet in Los Angeles’ hip downtown-adjacent Arts District – Bike Shed’s second location. In there will be: a full-service restaurant, café, bar and lounge, a barbershop, tattoo studio, events space and don’t forget the Large Retail Emporium. Which will include an exclusive line of Indian/Bike Shed branded apparel. (Full disclosure: I got a sweet jersey and hat along with the announcement.) Exactly when the opening will occur is still up in the air, but soon.
The design sketch is by Kiska, the people who brought you the Husqvarna Svart- and Vitpilens. EMotion is actually a joint venture involving KTM, Bajaj and a few other partners, which launched in March of this year. Germany’s Motorrad magazine reports that a host of industrial heavy hitters are involved in the project, the aim of which is “to develop a modular and scalable architecture for electric drive trains and batteries. The focus is on the use of materials that are as light as possible, efficient charging and drive systems and future-proof information systems. With the help of an 8-month field test, the needs of potential customers will also be determined from 2022 and the requirements of electromobility in urban and rural areas will be researched in practice. A first sketch, which was made by Kiska GmbH and can be seen in the lead picture above, should show which direction it could go.”
The reigning MotoGP champ seems “to have suffered damage due to stress accumulation” to the titanium plate doctors affixed to his right humerus following his big get-off at Jerez 1, so they went in and inserted a new one yesterday. One DNF and two DNS to start the 2020 season does not bode well for the Repsol Honda rider’s chances of defending his title. The Czech MotoGP round is this weekend. More here at MotoGP.com
In an outstandingly brazen display of adult delinquency, the inaugural Battle of the Baggers is set to go down during the MotoAmerica Laguna Seca event October 23-25 in beautiful Monterey, California. Fourteen contestants have been invited into the octagon; only one will come out on an Indian Challenger. That S&S-prepped machine will be ridden by multi-disciplined champ Tyler O’Hara. Actually, if you haven’t ridden a bagger lately, you’d be surprised how competent they are.
