Adventure Sports ES gets a new street-focus with 19-inch front wheel

American Honda announced the updated Africa Twin and Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES are returning to the U.S. for 2024. Both models, conspicuously missing from the 2023 lineup, return with updates previously announced for Europe last October.

You can read more in our First Look article, but here’s a quick recap. The engine remains a 1,084cc Parallel-Twin, but the intake and exhaust, valve timing, and compression, were all updated. U.S. figures weren’t released, but in Europe, Honda claims peak torque increased to 82.6 lb-ft. at 5,500 rpm from the previously claimed 77.4 lb-ft. at 6,250 rpm, while the claimed horsepower is the same peak of 100.6 hp at 7,500 rpm. American Honda does say the engine produces more power and torque in the low- and mid-rpm ranges.

Apart from the engine updates, the most significant change is a more on-road focus for the Adventure Sports variant, with shorter suspension travel and a new 19-inch front wheel. The Adventure Sports model also gets a new front fairing to improve wind protection and a seat with a thicker cushion than the previous unit.

For the U.S., the Adventure Sports models come standard with Showa’s Electronically Equipped Ride Adjustment electronic suspension. The standard model won’t be available in the U.S. with the Showa EERA suspension, even though it is offered as an option in Europe.

The standard Africa Twin does get tubeless tires (previously only available on the Adventure Sports model), a five-way height-adjustable windscreen, and new, slimmer styling with a more off-road focus.

Both the regular Africa Twin and the Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES will be available with a manual transmission or a dual clutch transmission (DCT), which has been updated for 2024 for smoother engagement at take-off and lower speeds.

The 2024 Honda Africa Twin will be available in Grand Prix Red for $14,799, with the DCT version priced at $15,599. The Adventure Sports ES variants will come in Pearl White, for $17,599 with a manual transmission, or $18,399 for DCT. All 2024 Africa Twin variants will be available in May.

Disappointing to read they left off the EERA option for the ‘standard’ bike, I thought that would have been a very capable all ‘rounder/2up version worth upgrading to if it ever arrived in the US. Not bc they aren't offering it, just in Europe only not here, boo. The significant weight loss from the AS-ES model was attractive to think about, ah well.

Why not. Honda should continue to produce these like BMW continued to produced the GS model line. These machines are the best all arounders for those of us not willing to ride cruisers, sport bikes or tourers aka mobile homes.
