2016 Triumph Street Twin And Bonneville T120 Recalled for Potential Fire Risk

Triumph is recalling the 2016 Street Twin and Bonneville T120 because of fuel may leak into the electrical system, creating a fire risk. As of this writing, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has only confirmed a recall for the Street Twin, the agency released a notice from Triumph that indicates the Bonneville T120 will also be recalled. Meanwhile, the U.K.’s Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency has announced a recall on both models.

According to documents released by NHTSA, the subharness supplying power to the fuel pump may get damaged, breaching the wire insulation and exposing bare wire. Fuel may travel down the exposed wiring toward the main harness connector. An electrical short may ignite the fuel, causing a fire.

Triumph first discovered the problem on Jan. 19, 2016 during routine testing of a development model. Testers found damaged insulation in one of the wires that passes through the connector on the fuel pump plate. Fuel was also found inside the wire insulation, having traveled down the sealed main harness connector. An investigation determined the damage may have been caused by plastic moulding flash from a manufacturing tool.

In late January, a Triumph engineer met with the supplier of the subharness who determined the problem was caused by a change in the tooling made in September. From February to early March, Triumph continued to work with the supplier to identify the specific batches of subharnesses affected by the problem. Triumph initiated the recall process on March 14.

Triumph dealers will inspect the fuel pump subharness on affected motorcycles. If the subharness bears one of the faulty batch numbers, the dealer will replace the fuel pump subharness. The recall affects 120 Street Twins in the U.S. We expect NHTSA to announce a separate recall for the Bonneville T120 shortly.
