7. Volkswagen XL Sport

Volkswagen’s limited-production XL1, with its diesel hybrid powertrain, might be great at producing ultimate mileage, but hypermileage doesn’t normally equate to a thrilling driving experience. In an exercise to flex its engineering muscle, and to take advantage of its recent purchase of Ducati, VW debuted the XL Sport concept car at the 2014 Paris Motor Show. Instead of the diesel hybrid in the XL1, however, VW stuffed the 197 hp V-Twin from the 1199 Panigale Superleggera! VW claims the car weighs 1962 lbs, has a drag coefficient of 0.258, can hit 168 mph top speed and 0-62 mph in 5.7 seconds. VW also restyled the car to make it look less science experiment and more sportscar, updating it with paddle shifters, sport suspension and ceramic brakes along the way. It’s too bad this is only a concept.

    The Radical is undoubtedly the best on this list. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that Radical has the most desirable lineup of sports cars for the money. I’d much rather have a Radical than a Porsche, for instance.

            That would be incredible. Good luck with that project, sir. I would love to own a 510, and the Hayabusa ‘plant would be an excellent choice, assuming it could be adapted to a front-rear application.

            I don’t have the skill, patience – and most importantly – money to make a Hayabusa engine work in a 510. I’ll stick to day dreaming. 🙂

    Having had quite a bit of seat time in the Scorpion P6… I have to disagree with the snap oversteer statement. The P6 is incredibly balanced and can actually hold a slide. It will only loop when the angle is too much. Everything else that was said about it was on point! It is one hell of a blast to drive!

    Just want to point out that Radical has a race series in the US as well, not just in the UK. Also, their SR8 has a V8 based on two Hayabusa engines. 460hp!
    And I’ve heard tell the Motus RCR is for sale. Talk about a unique track toy!

    You missed all the airplanes with motorcycle engines! The original Pietenpol had a Model A engine, but soon gained a Henderson engine installation.

    There’s a neat single-make race series for the Radical going on. I know the West Coast group is based at SMMR and a group makes it’s way around some tracks in the southwest.

    Add another rear wheel to the Scorpion and you have a Formula SAE autocross car. 600cc sportbike engine and maybe 400lbs. Geared for tight autocross courses but some of them have added Sprint car wings and thrown away the 20mm intake restrictor. They produce illegal adrenaline levels. Sneak into your local university’s Mechanical Engineering Labs – maybe the team will sell you last year’s car…
