Wonderful Scooter for Just Having Fun!
By (I am an Owner) on Nov 12, 2012I am 56 and have been playing with small 2 wheel vehicles for many years now. I have a Honda Aero 80 (nearly new), a Yamaha QT 50, and now the Tomos Nitro 50. The Tomos is an excellent motorcycle. It is a true bargain, since it is really built by Sym in a plant they own in China. So typical of Chinese ... bikes, it is inexpensive to buy and untypical of Chinese bikes, it has great build quality. The fit, finish and all materials used are first rate. In 2012 Tomos began ordering the bike with an upgraded CDI. That means the scooter is pretty fast for this configuration of bike - GY6 4 stroke. In fact I an easily 250 pounds and the stock scooter goes a steady 35 mph. But now here is the good part. If you take off the cover of the CVT assembly (a few screws and your done....)you will see that the assembly has a nylon spacer washer preventing the CVT belt from reaching its full potential. Use a wire cutter, or vice grip to break and remove this spacer washer and now the bike flies! A top end of 42 mph and really exciting pickup! The Tomos Notro 50 has a few downsides, hiowever. One is that you better be prepared to learn how to do oil changes. The other is that the CVT belt has to be changed every 7,500 miles or so. That would be a hassle to replace yourself. The TOMOS Nitro 50 is a good all around scoot that is a blast to ride and should provide its owner a ton of fun for many years.
