R1200RT vs Triumph Trophy vs K1600GTL
By (I am an Owner) on Aug 27, 2015You might be wondering why I included the K1600GTL in this comparison. The simple reason is that these were the final three motorcycles I considered for satisfying a touring aspiration with my wife. (I did ride the 2015 Harley Davidson Electra Glide Ultra, just to be able to say I can safely eliminate ... it from this discussion.)
By far, the K1600GTL engine performance was leaps and bounds ahead of the Trophy and the R1200RT. But the Triumph Triple was also very satisfying and smooth. The R1200 finished in third place, with respect to engine performance, but overall feel, handling, and comfort were the deciding factors for me in favor of the R1200. The overall weight and slow speed maneuvering of the K1600 put it behind both the Trophy and the R1200. The bike is simply too big and cumbersome for me, and I'm 6'3" and 260 lbs. The rear seat swallowed my 5'2'' 130 pound wife. She prefers the R1200 by far.
It turns out that the lower weight R1200RT proved to be right choice for me as a total package. I could have been just as happy with the slightly heavier Trophy, but the added technology of the BMW, plus its handsome cutting edge looks, and comfortable rear pillion gave it the slight edge over the Trophy, so I bought my very first brand new motorcycle, (since my 1973 Bonneville,) right off the dealer's show room floor.

BMW 1200 RT
By (I am an Owner) on May 04, 2015This is truly an incredible Sport Touring Bike. BMW has set the standard in this class, like they have with the GS.
After spending seat time this weekend, I have found the one motorcycle that satisfies it for me. Comfortable riding position. Handling and Performance. Technology. Wind and weather ... protection.
I am very impressed.
