Yamaha Unveils 2011 WSBK Team

No title sponsor announced

Yamaha’s World Superbike Factory team will race in the company’s corporate blue without a title sponsor.

Yamaha unveiled its 2011 WSBK-spec YZF-R1 and riders Eugene Laverty and Marco Melandri, all clad in Yamaha blue. Instead of a major sponsor’s logo, like that of Sterilgarda which sponsored the team the previous two seasons, the superbike will feature the R1 logo and the colors from the production model.

The WSBK team’s lack of a title sponsor is an issue, especially since Yamaha’s MotoGP team also has yet to announce a major sponsor.

The team will feature two new riders this season with Laverty coming from the Parkalgar Honda World Supersport team and Melandri coming from the Gresini Honda MotoGP team.

Laverty finished second in the 2010 World Supersport standings behind Ten Kate Honda’s Sofuoglu, despite leading the class with eight wins in 13 races. Melandri finished tenth in the MotoGP standings last season with a single top-five finish.
