WSBK: Phillip Island Test session one

Biaggi tops the timesheet for Aprilia

By Motorcycle.Com Staff, Feb. 18, 2009
Max Biaggi set the quickest time in the Feb. 16-18 World Superbike Championship tests at Phillip Island, Australia.

The first of two tests leading up to the March 1 season-opener featured the Aprilia and Kawasaki factory teams as well as satellite squads DFX Ducati, Stiggy Honda and Hannspree Honda Althea.

Riding the new Aprilia RSV4, Biaggi set the top time of 1:32.59, just a hundredth of a second ahead of DFX Ducati’s Regis Laconi. Biaggi’s teammate Shinya Nakano had the third fastest time.

Max Biaggi recorded the top time in the first half of the final pre-season WSBK test.“These three days have been very profitable,” says Biaggi. “We completed every test possible with all the material available, in every condition and we know exactly the problems we are facing. Now is the time to make some important modifications, obviously not for the next race because that’s impossible, but shortly after.”

Kawasaki’s Broc Parkes surprised many observers on the final day of the session by shaving 2.5 seconds from his day two time. Parkes’ time of 1:32.90 was fourth on the time sheet and less than half a second behind Biaggi.

The second half of the Phillip Island test will be held Feb. 20-22, featuring factory teams from Ducati, Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki and BMW.
