Senate revives public land bill
The Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009, S. 22, was defeated in the U.S. House, on March 11 after it fell just short of the two-thirds vote required.
The Senate however has revived S. 22 as an amendment to H.R.146, the Revolutionary War and War of 1812 Battlefield Acquisition Grant Program.
Organizations such as the American Motorcyclist Association and the Motorcycle Industry Council petitioned against S. 22. The AMA claimed a major victory after the original bill was defeated but Ed Moreland, AMA vice president for government relations, asked motorcycle enthusiasts to remain vigilant because the bill, or one similar to it, could re-emerge in a different form. Morelands prediction proved to be true.
Despite last weeks defeat of S. 22 in the House, the Senate is employing rare tactics to shove this ban through Congress, says Moreland. The AMA is once again urging all motorcyclists to contact their Senators to vote against this bill, which is an unfair and overly restrictive change to public lands policy. The measure unreasonably bans motorized recreation on 2.1 million acres of public lands by inappropriately designating it as Wilderness. Continued responsible access to public lands is a vitally important right for current and future generations.
