Good First Bike for a Big Guy?

I have a friend who is like 265 lbs, 6'5". He's interested in bikes and wants advice on what to start with. He asked me if he should go cruiser or sportbike; I think he tends to lean toward cruisers. I told him to go with a 'standard' and described a bit what that means. He wants to buy used; he doesn't want to spend more than 4 grand.
Any ideas? The only thing that popped into my head was nighthawk 750 but there must be other options out there. Seruzawa, he doesn't want your '84 Magna so no sale.
