Aprilia RSV 1000 R Purchase?

So, its time to 'upgrade' from my 2000 CBR f4. The natural first choice, for me, is a newer f4 RR.
I sat on a 2006 this past weekend and loved the feel. Its small (feels smaller then my f4) and the center of balance seems perfectly located somewhere below my knees. As the review article in MO stated, you feel like you're sitting on top of the front wheel.
I made, however, the mistake of stopping at an Aprilia dealership on my way home; need chain lube unavailable at the Honda dealership (those bums). I chatted with the manager and on my way out, from the corner of my eye I saw, what I later learned, a 2001 RSV 1000R.
Now, I've always been a fan of the Italians. I first saw the Duc. 996 in the MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) in San Francisco as part of a 'functional art' exhibit. I was fortunate to live in Rome for a year and all things there are beautiful (not just the women).
But, I constantly hear the groans and moans about the 6K mile Duc. engine 'rebuild' process and the high cost of maintenance etc. but I haven't heard a lot of whining about the Aprilia.
So, my question to you, my fellow riders is this:
"Is the RSV a mechanical nightmare, expensive to maintain and unreliable, or not?"
