Lorenzo injury update

CAT scan reveals second fracture

By Motorcycle.Com Staff, May. 08, 2008
MotoGP rider Jorge Lorenzo’s injuries following a crash during practice for the Grand Prix of China are worse than originally thought.

Dr. Xavier Mir, who operated on Lorenzo’s right arm in April to relieve compartmental syndrome, examined Lorenzo at the Dexeus Institute in Barcelona, Spain on Monday.

How long do you think you could do this with two broken ankles?A 3D CAT scan revealed a fracture in Lorenzo’s right talus bone, the part of the ankle which connects the leg bones to the foot. The right ankle was originally thought to have escaped unscathed. The scan also revealed a torn lateral internal ligament in the left ankle.

Lorenzo will wear a cast on his right ankle and an elastic support for his left. The Fiat Yamaha rider will be confined to a wheelchair for the time being. Dr. Mir will conduct more detailed tests May 12.

Lorenzo, who sits second in the MotoGP championship standings behind Honda’s Dani Pedrosa, was initially diagnosed with a bone chip in his left ankle. He was still able to race in Shanghai following treatment from the Clinica Mobile. Despite his injuries, Lorenzo finished fourth.
