AMA-MX adds womens class

MX Sports acquires WMA championship
By Motorcycle.Com Staff, Jan. 14, 2009
AMA Motocross promoter MX Sports has acquired the Womens Motocross Association National Championship. Beginning with the 2009 season, the WMA championship will be integrated into the AMA Pro Motocross championship.

MX Sports acquired the rights to the WMA from Miki Keller who founded the womens series in 2004. Keller will stay on as a consultant for MX Sports and as director of the Womens class.

I am thrilled with this latest development for the WMA and womens professional motocross, says Keller. This validates my original belief that women racers are worthy of competing in their own series and young riders deserve to have a top level championship to aspire to.

The 2009 AMA Motocross schedule will feature eight womens motocross rounds.

Miki has done an outstanding job developing and nurturing womens motocross and leading the sport into the spotlight and mainstream acceptance. With the new role of MX Sports as operators of the AMA Pro Motocross Championship, we are finally in a position to provide the women racers the treatment they have earned in the series. Additionally, we look forward to working with Miki on the transition and into the 2009 season.

Ashley Fiolek will share the same stage as the men as she defends her women's motocross title.
The Womens class will use the same technical regulations as the mens 250cc class. Competitors will go through the same inspections and attend the same rider meetings as the men.

The women riders will be included in pre-event promotions and post-event press conferences and races will be included in the MX Sports television package and featured in live webcasts.

This is huge news for the sport of womens motocross here in the U.S., says reigning womens motocross champion Ashley Fiolek. We all know that Miki Keller has worked tirelessly to improve the environment for women in this sport and for the WMA to make another step forward with MX Sports is awesome. I look forward to defending my WMA Championship in 2009 and working with Miki and the MX Sports team to further improve the series.
