2009 Isle of Man - Senior TT results
Platers victory ended teammate John McGuinness Senior TT winning streak at five. The win also gave Plater 84 points throughout the week to lead all riders and win the inaugural Joey Dunlop Trophy.
The Senior TT race began 30 minutes behind schedule due to rain, but when the race began, it was McGuinness off to the strong start. McGuinness broke his own record with an average of 130.953 mph on the first lap of the race. Plater also had a good start, averaging 130.490 mph for the second fastest lap.
McGuinness extended his lead on the second lap with an even more impressive average of 131.578 mph. Plater came short of the 131 mark and trailed McGuinness by 16 seconds after two laps.
McGuinness slowed slightly on lap three, averaging 125 mph, but his lead still grew to 19 seconds despite a 40-second pit stop.
The Isle of Man record holder appeared poised to win his second race of the week when his bikes chain broke on lap four. That opened the way for Plater who held a ten second advantage over McAdoo Kawasaki s Conor Cummins. Plater would finish 20 seconds ahead of Cummins for the win.
Another broken chain, this time retiring Hydrex Hondas Guy Martin, promoted Padgetts Hondas Ian Hutchinson to third. The winner of the Superstock and first Supersport race, Hutchinson led all riders in the Joey Dunlop point standings and would clinch the Trophy by finishing higher than sixth in the Senior TT.
Hutchinsons trophy hopes were dashed when he fell shortly after he began his sixth lap. The accident knocked Hutchinson out of the race and gave Plater the Joey Dunlop Trophy.
Robinson Concrete Hondas Gary Johnson finished third for the final podium position.
The mood following the race was subdued after local racer John Crellin died following a crash in the fifth lap.
