WSBK: Schumacher rides at Portimao

F1 legend tests Ducati and Yamaha Superbikes

Formula One racing legend Michael Schumacher was a guest participant at the World Superbike Championships post-season tests this week in Portugal.

The seven-time F1 champion got to test race machines from Yamaha and Ducati on Algarve circuit in Portimao, Portugal on the first day of testing, Nov. 3.

Schumacher spent the morning testing Yamaha Motor Italias 2008 R1, the bike riders Troy Corser and Noriyuki Haga rode to respective second and third-place finishes in the championship standings. In the afternoon, Schumacher switched to Troy Bayliss championship-winning Ducati 1098 F08.

After getting the chance to ride the top two bikes from the 2008 WSBK season, Schumacher described the new Algarve circuit as technically demanding and safe. Schumacher was a guest of WSBK promoters FGSport at the season-ending Portimao races Nov. 2. Schumacher was invited onto the starting grid between the two Superbike races and met with Bayliss and other riders such as Carlos Checa and Max Biaggi.

Since retiring from F1 racing, Schumacher has taken up motorcycle racing as a hobby, taking part in a handful of motorcycle races around Europe. Eager to hone his skills at his new hobby, Schumacher also received some tips and suggestions from the riders and teams participating in the test.
