Schwantz, R. Hayden join Indy Moto2 team

American Honda reveals wildcard team
By Motorcycle.Com Staff, Jun. 16, 2010
Kevin Schwantz and Roger Hayden will join Erion Racing to form American Honda's Moto2 wildcard team. Schwantz will be team manager for American Hondas Moto2 entry at the Indianapolis Grand Prix while Hayden was selected to ride the Moriwaki MD600. Both men come with impressive resumes, but their selection is a bit of a surprise, given their associations with other manufacturers.

Schwantz will lead the team staffed by Kevin Erion and his Erion Racing technicians for American Hondas Moto2 wildcard entry at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Schwantz is best known for his long association with Suzuki so his selection to manage the Honda squad was unexpected. The 1993 500cc Grand Prix World Champion does have experience with using Honda CBR600RR motorcycles in the Schwantz Motorcycle Riding School however. The Moto2 series uses prototype bikes with engines based on the CBR600RR.

Its an honor for me to be chosen as team manager, says Schwantz. Weve been using CBR600RRs for some time now at our schools, and Ive ridden a Moto2 bike and its very good. I watched the first three Moto2 races and I expect the racing to be just as good at Indy.

Hayden is antoher curious choice for the team. Hayden currently rides a Kawasaki ZX-10R in the World Superbike Championship and won the 2007 AMA Supersport title on a ZX-6R. Before joining Team Green however, Hayden rode for the Erion Honda team, so the Moto2 race is a bit of a reunion.

This is a great opportunity for me to race in front of my home crowd at a MotoGP event, says Hayden. The Moto2 class is really competitive and Im looking forward to jumping in the middle of it.

The American Honda Moto2 team will also help with fund-raising activities for Ride for Kids and the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. Schwantz will lead 300 participants in the Lap of Champions at Indianapolis Motor Speedway to benefit PBTF.
