Gilera Introduces New Sportbike

European sources report that Gilera is going to unveil a new 600cc sportbike at the Milan show in September.

The Milan Show will be used to gauge public opinion on the bike to see if it will go into production. Thus, the bike will not be available in 2002, but may be ready in 2003.

Rumors have it that that the bike's engine is an injected version of Suzuki's Year 2000 GSX-R600 motor. The bike will be in competion with Japanese bikes, because it leaves out the steep price tag often attached to Italian bikes.

This will be the first time in quite a few years that Gilera will be producing a motorcycle of any real significance, as far as the sportbike-buying public is concerned. Gilera plans on this being the first of a variety of motorcycles produced by the company that will continue to take the company into the new millenium.

We will update you as more information becomes available.
