2020 BMW S1000XR First Look
As we expected from CARB filings, BMW is updating the S1000XR for 2020, giving it an updated engine, a brand new chassis and an 11-pound weight savings compared to the 2019 model.
The 2020 BMW S1000XR uses a newer engine, based on the current S1000RR’s inline-Four, but surprisingly without the ShiftCam variable valve timing system. BMW claims an output of 162 hp at 11000 rpm and 84 lb-ft. at 9250 rpm, with a linear torque curve for better rideability.
The sport-touring S1000XR should benefit from the new, longer fourth, fifth and sixth gear ratios BMW says reduces noise and improve fuel economy at higher speeds. Along with an anti-hopping clutch, the S1000XR receives an electronically-controlled engine drag torque control (MSR) system which prevents the rear wheel from slipping during abrupt shifting or throttling.
The frame and swingarm are also new, shaving 4.6 pounds, helping the S1000XR reach its claimed weight of 498 pounds. The new chassis gives the engine more of a load-bearing function than previously, while the lighter double-sided swingarm reduces unsprung weight.
For 2020, the S1000XR receives the latest version of BMW’s Dynamic Electronic Suspension Adjustment (Dynamic ESA). BMW will also offer an upgrade to Dynamic ESA Pro which offers two damping modes and automatic load compensation.
Other standard electronic features include four engine modes, traction control, wheelie control, hill start control and ABS including Dynamic Brake Control, BMW’s term for cornering ABS. Optional upgrades include electronic cruise control and quick shift.
The 2020 S1000XR also receives a 6.5-inch TFT display developed for better readability. Controlled via the multi-controller on the handlebar, the display shows ride data, vehicle status, electronic settings and navigation.
In Europe, the S1000XR uses LED turn signals and an optional daytime running lights. In U.S. models, only the headlights use LEDs. Cornering lighting is available as an option.
The 2020 BMW S1000XR will be offered in two color options: Ice Grey and the higher-priced Racing Red/White Aluminum. U.S. pricing has not yet been announced
