Top 10 Months For Motorcycle Theft

For calendar year 2011, the National Insurance Crime Bureau tracked a number of statistics regarding motorcycle theft, including the top 10 stolen brands and the top 10 states for theft. Those lists can be found elsewhere on this site. Here, we list the top 10 months for motorcycle theft based on the NICB findings. In ascending order, they are:

10. January (2632 motorcycles stolen)

Since weather data started being recorded in 1895, the national average temperature for the month of January has hovered around 31 degrees Fahrenheit, making it the coldest month on this list. And we can only imagine thieves are put off from stealing motorcycles when it’s that cold outside.

9. March (3317 motorcycles stolen)

It’s somewhat ironic 3317 motorcycles were stolen nationwide in March, 2011. Take the last three numbers — 317 — correlate them to months and days, and what do you get? March 17, or St. Patrick’s day. We posit bike thieves were inspired by the green-beer drinking holiday to steal this coincidental number of motorcycles.

8. November (3363 motorcycles stolen)

For many parts of the country, November marks the last few days of riding season before parking the bikes away. Unfortunately, this time of year bike thieves want to put someone else’s pride and joy in another garage.

7. April (3867 motorcycles stolen)

April marks the return of riding season for much of the country, which means it’s time to bring the motorcycles out from hibernation. It also brings thieves out from the woodwork, too.

6. October (4042 motorcycles stolen)

Everyone knows October 31 is Halloween. What many may not realize, however, is October 27 is mother-in-law day. And it’s likely fair to say that some of you don’t like your mother-in-law. For thieves who feel the same way, we’re guessing stealing a motorcycle sounds like a better alternative than dinner with the in-laws.

5. September (4454 motorcycles stolen)

In honor of National Pirate Day, September 19, scallywags steal and plunder booty from land lubbers. Arrr!

4. May (4632 motorcycles stolen)

May 17 is National Ride to Work Day. Unfortunately for some, motorcycle thieves take this day too literally on occasion.

3. June (4977 motorcycles stolen)

You should be especially worried about your motorcycle’s whereabouts on June 18. Why? Because June 18 is International Panic Day. Consider yourself warned.

2. August (5397 motorcycles stolen)

Summer is in full swing during August, and so is bike theft, as this month ranks second in motorcycle thefts. Ironically, August 27 happens to be Global Forgiveness Day. Though, if someone were to steal our motorcycles, forgiveness wouldn’t come easily.

1. July (5544 motorcycles stolen)

July is typically when summer shines bright across the country, meaning motorcyclists are out in droves. As such, it shouldn’t be difficult to imagine July’s fine weather also accounts for the most motorcycle thefts for the year. Fitting, then, that July 3 is also Disobedience Day.
