Daytona 2018: More Races Than a Wheel Bearing Factory!
Before we got married, I took my wife to the stock car races at El Cajon Speedway, east of San Diego. It was kind of a test. I wanted to be sure she could handle my Southern, inbred hick-ness before signing on. This was back in the 1980s when there were still a lot of Chevelle-bodied cars running on America’s dirt ovals. In fact, it seemed like just about all the cars were Chevy Chevelles that night.
Babes Ride Out 2017
There is a beacon that shines brightly each October – a mysterious cosmic force beckoning female riders from all over the globe to congregate in the heart of the High Desert. What started as a casual camp trip with a small group of friends has exploded into a large-scale annual event in Joshua Tree, CA. Five years after its inception, the popularity and attendance of Babes Ride Out has skyrocketed like a one-way mission to Mars.

2017 Venice Vintage Motorcycle Rally Report
This past Saturday marked the tenth installment of one of Southern California’s favorite vintage motorcycle events, the Venice Vintage Motorcycle Rally. Established in 2007, the Venice Vintage Motorcycle Club (VVMC) is comprised of a band of motorcyclists faithful to and united by the love of riding and maintaining old machines. They’re dedicated to the preservation and celebration of motorcycle culture and everything that goes with it.

Women's Sportbike Rally West Report
If a group of male riders got together to plan a sportbike rally, you might guess that the agenda would include a race to the death. For light evening entertainment, perhaps there would be a cage match between the newest flipflop-donning squid on his ’Busa and the most well-meaning of ATGATT riders. When a group of female riders organize a sportbike rally, it’s all about philanthropy, education, and outreach.
Upcoming Motorcycle Events: July 2017
The following public motorcycle events and rides are happening in July 2017.
The Ninth Annual Quail Motorcycle Gathering
The Quail Motorcycle Gathering on May 6 included more than 350 drool-worthy vintage and custom motorcycles, from Italian tiddlers to full-on race bikes, arrayed on the green grasses of the Quail Lodge & Golf Club in Carmel, California. All this eye candy was fawned over by around 3,000 people – record attendance for the nine-year-old event. It was enough to warm the heart of any gearhead.
2017 Tom Cates Memorial Bike Show
Everyone who’s anyone in the two-wheel world attends the annual Trailblazers banquet in Carson, California. It’s the gold standard of motorcycle social events where legends are honored, the fallen are immortalized, and friends’ shared days are told.
2017 Women's Motorcycle Show Report
If you walk along Mission Road as it hugs the L.A. River just South of 101, you’ll pass by gray industrial buildings behind razor-wire fences, a high school, a mission, a large canned foods plant, and then seemingly out of nowhere, a curious and cheerful blue building that really sticks out. A red banner painted above the second story window reads “Lucky Wheels.”
2017 Grand National Roadster Show Report
As the event’s name implies, this show, first launched in 1949, focuses on four-wheeled vehicles albeit not all technically qualifying as “roadsters” which back in the day meant an open two-seater minus doors and even windshields. Tracing the nomenclature further, “roadster” initially was the label attached to a horse well-equipped for traveling, and later applied to bicycles and tricycles of the late 1800s.
The Sisters' Centennial Motorcycle Ride
One hundred years ago two sisters were traveling coast to coast on Indian Powerplus motorcycles advocating women’s right to serve as WWI motorcycle messengers. It was 1916 when Augusta and Adeline Van Buren embarked on a journey they had no idea would have such historical significance a century later. Traveling from New York City to San Francisco, the journey took just over two months to complete, making them the first women to ride motorcycles across the continental United States.
Evans Off Camber - Sturgis 2016 Wrap-up
Anyone who has attended a large-scale rally will tell you that there is a certain point, after the front wheel has turned for home, that a feeling of emptiness can set in, a sensation, as the events of the past few days pass out of sight in your mirrors, that can call into question your very reason for being. OK, not really, but I’ve spent hours reminiscing about a rally as the miles rolled by underneath me on my way home. So, grab your gear and take a virtual ride home with me.
The Eighth Annual Quail Motorcycle Gathering
In the pantheon of vintage motorcycle shows, the Quail Motorcycle Gathering is a little like your neighborhood block party. Part Concours d’Elegance, part custom show and part biker bash, it’s a place where a hardtail chopper with springer forks sits happily alongside an impeccable Manx Norton. Vincents, Velocettes, and boutique customs share the grassy expanse with a newly introduced Yamaha XSR900 in retro Kenny Roberts livery.
