My thoughts on my bike
By (I am an Owner) on Feb 22, 2014Ok, I came off of a 2000 Triumph Spint RS with the 955i triple to this VFR800. I like the looks of the bike and it was fine riding from Vegas to E. Ventura County where I live. The things I don't like about it is the off idle throttle. It is either on or off. Really disappointing. Also, the ... fuel mileage is about 10mpg less than my Triumph. I get consistently about 38mpg.
I have ridden it in canyons at spirited speeds and it performed well, especially since it is undersprung for my weight and I hadn't even had the suspension set up for my weight, let alone upgraded to the correct spring rates. Brakes work well, I actually like the linked brake sna the VTEC did take some getting used to, especially on tighter canyons. You have to run under 6500 RPM or over 7000 or you may end up with a big burst of acceleration mid curve. I bought it in 08/2012 and it only had 6627 miles on it. It now has 17600 miles. I did have the radiator cap gp bad on me after I changed the coolant and that caused me to suffer a low speed low side, due to coolant overflowing the reservoir on to the back tire, which really sucks, but I should have recognized the signs and I didn't.
Overall, I like the bike, but there are definitely so things Honda dropped the ball on, such as suspension and engine power. I feel that with the V4 platform, they should have been able to coax more torque out of it and bettered the mpgs. But, there are many examples of them going over 100k miles, so there is that.
