Falling in love with the USA
By (I am an Owner) on Nov 17, 2008The 2005 Harley Davidson Electra Glide, Ultra Classic. I have ridden sports bikes for years but never spent much time with a pillion (For obvious reasons) In an effort to involve my wife in my passion, I chased a childhood dream of owning a HD.
For no other reason than it was available, ... I purchased a 2005, HD Ultra Classic. Living in Northern Ireland, we are limited to the number of bikes available and everyone said "You are MAD, we don't have the roads for a big bike like that, they guzzle fuel, vibrate like an old tractor and you will be sick of it in a week"
Everyone's entitled to their opinion, I guess. (That's why I am allowed to write this review)
Needless to say, they were all wrong!! As soon as I had taught me legs to go forwards instead of curled up under my butt, I was away and loving every second of it. Small, twisting roads were easy to handle, vibration was limited to "noticeable" (Only adding to the experience) Fuel consumption was less than my Ninja ZX9R and I was far from sick of the bike. To be honest, I fell in love with it, as did my wife (Although she now refers to it as "our" bike, which is kinda worrying)
Now forgive me but, protection from the elements, wind and rain are a necessary evil in Northern Ireland and the HD has acres of plastic to shield you from the hostile environments of Eastern Europe. I will say this and leave it to your imagination......"You know there's enough protection on a bike when you can ride the open roads and smell your own farts"
The riders position is very relaxed and there's enough padding there to allow miles of tarmac to be eaten without the slightest hint of discomfort. (My wife assures me that the pillion is just as comfortable, although she would settle for less protection from the elements - For some unknown reason)
All said, this bike is a pleasure to own. I am yet to find fault and I don't expect to.
Grab your polishing cloths, cut the sleeves from an old denim jacket, embrace the dream and buy yourself an Ultra Classic.
It may be the only time you ever take advice from an Irishman and not regret it.
Keep it rubber side down.
