Oil and lubricant company Chevron has released a new fuel additive designed for motorcycles and other powersports and small engines. The new Techron Protection Plus Powersports & Small Engine Fuel System Treatment is available now at AutoZone.com, Walmart.com and Amazon.com, with additional retailers to be announced soon.

The additive is safe for use in all gasoline-powered engines, including carbureted, two-stroke, four-stroke, port or electronic fuel inject and even direct injected engines. The formula is also designed for ethanol-blended fuels.

According to Chevron, the Techron Powersports additive helps clean fuel injectors, combustion chambers, throttle bodies and carburetors, restoring power and performance while improving fuel efficiency. The additive removes and prevents intake valve deposits, which can inhibit the flow of gasoline. The results, according to Chevron, are improved throttle response and smoother idling. Techron also helps minimize cold-start issues and deposit-related knock and ping by removing carbon deposits from the combustion chamber.

Techron Powersports is also specially formulated to protect against some of the harmful effects of gasoline containing ethanol which can be corrosive to some materials, particularly to some hoses, gaskets and even fuel tanks on older machines.

Chevron recommends using 1 oz. of Techron Powersports for four gallons of fuel. The additive begins to work with the first application and continues to work as the tank is fueled up, re-treated and operated. Techron Powersports can also help stabilize fuel for when you’re storing your motorcycle for an extended period of time.

“Techron is committed to developing superior fuel additives for all internal-combustion engines. Our industry research revealed a distinct need for a more powerful solution in the powersports and small engine market,” said Joe DeFina, Chevron’s North America Fuel Additives Business Manager. “As a result, we engineered the most comprehensive, high-performance fuel additive and tested it for the harshest environments. Whether customers are seeking everyday reliability, working power or maximum performance at wide-open throttle, our Powersports & Small Engine Fuel System Treatment combines ultimate protection with the cleaning power of the Techron brand.”

I was a Chevron Dealer in the eighties when Chevron first introduced Techron. As you would expect all the naysayers and "experts" called it snake oil and even selling the stuff, I had my doubts. Well close to 40 years later the "snake oil" is still being sold and Chevron has even introduced a version into their fuels coming from the pumps. It might be noted that Chevron fuels were the first and for a long while only "Top Tier" fuel.
I owe Chevron nothing. They stabbed me in the back when they closed my station but their products have always held a very high standard and I see no reason to doubt this new Techron. I have over 20 bikes so you know I don't ride most of then regularly. I'll find out firsthand if it will ease the task of cleaning carbs every time I ride some of my bikes.

It has more to do with the carburetor, jetting, and engine compression than the gas. I use 93 octane from the same Exxon station for both my race (Mikuni flat slide) carbureted motorcycle and my wife's Vespa. The Vespa starts with no fuss even after six months in the garage. No additive, no stabilizer, nothing added. Under the same conditions, I have to drain the carburetor, empty and rinse the tank and refill with fresh gasoline to bring my bike to life. Every spring. The bike didn't have this problem with the stock carburetors.

    Typo in paragraph two.
    “Port or electronic inject.”
