It's Official: No Isle of Man

It's official now (as we reported it would be last week) and the Manx government has called off the TT races because of the foot-and-mouth threat to the island. The island's chief minister, Donald Gelling, made the expected announcement following a sitting of the Tynwald parliament.

Farmers feared that the 40,000 spectators who walk around the 37-mile circuit would bring the disease from the mainland. The Isle of Man has over 250,000 livestock, including famous Loaghtan sheep...

Other social events surrounding the TT will go ahead as planned in the first week in June.

It's reported by the BBC that the split decision by Tynwald members is still likely to cost the island several million in lost revenue.
