BMW issues recall of 122,000 motorcycles
According to BMW Motorrad, a potential fault in the front brake pipe may cause a brake fluid leak. The recall affects an estimated 122,000 K1200GT, R1200R, R1200RT, R1200ST and R1200GS and R1200GS Adventure models manufactured between August 2006 and May 2009.
Units with this problem may notice a drop in fluid levels in the handlebar-mounted brake fluid reservoir. Low fluid levels may result in loss of braking performance. Only the front brake is affected by this issue.
BMW estimates only one tenth of a percent of the recalled motorcycles may have leaking brake lines (that number translates to 122 out of 122,000 units). No accidents have been reported as a result of this fault.
BMW North America has previously filed recall campaigns with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration related to front brake lines for the R1200RT (recall announced in 2009) and 2006-2008 R1200R, R1200ST, R1200GS and R1200GS Adventure (recall announced in 2008). In those earlier recalls, dealers installed new front brake lines with modified routing.
