Yamaha‘s MT-09 is getting a larger engine for 2021, as part of an update to allow the “Master of Torque” Triple to meet Euro 5 standards. The new engine will increase from the current 847cc to close to 890cc and increase its maximum power by 4 hp to a claimed 118 hp while reducing its emission output. At the moment, we can only confirm the MT-09 will receive the updated engine, but we expect other Yamaha models that share the three-cylinder engine, such as the Tracer 900, XSR900 and Niken to receive the new powerplant as well.

Yamaha continues to consolidate its naming structure by replacing the FJ name with Tracer, which has been used in Europe. Consequently, the bike we’ve known as the FJ-09 will come to the U.S. as a 2019 model (yes, a 2019 model) called the Tracer 900. In the move to the 2019 model year, the Tracer 900 will gain a sibling, the Tracer 900 GT. Both will be available in the second half of 2018 as early release 2019 models. Prices have not been set.

Yamaha has filed a trademark application in Europe for the name “Tracer GT,” suggesting a new touring model is on the way. The application was filed April 19 with the European Union Intellectual Property Office for use of the name for “motorcycles, scooters, mopeds, three-wheeled motorcycles, three-wheeled scooters, three-wheeled mopeds and parts and fittings for all the aforesaid goods.”
