Spies-Mladin Show Rolls on at Infineon
Spies-Mladin show rolls on at Infineon
In what has become a familiar sight all season, Ben Spies and Mat Mladin stood at the top of the podium for both races at the Sonoma, Calif. circuit. The pair has held the first and second spots in all but one race this year. Injuries prevented teammate Tommy Hayden from racing this weekend and completing a fourth-straight podium sweep.
Monster Energy Kawasaki rider Jamie Hacking finished about six seconds behind Mladin in both races for a pair of podium spots.
Spies started race one in the pole and held the leap after each lap for the victory.
The Rockstar Makita Suzuki GSX-R1000 was working really good, says Spies about the first race. We wanted to get a comfortable margin because this track is really physical and you have to work pretty hard. We just tried to put some good laps together and that was pretty much it. It was a pretty hot race and it ended up being a fairly tough race.
The second race had quicker lap times but the same results as Spies led from start to finish to record his 22nd career win and fourth in a row.
We had the same results [Sunday], but the pace was a bit quicker, says Mladin. I felt more comfortable on the motorbike, but I still couldn't get on the back of Ben.
Mladin maintains his lead in the overall standings with 242 points but the two victories pulled Spies closer with 233.
The AMA Superbike Championship continues May 29 June 1 at Miller Motorsports Park.
