Snow delays British Superbike start
A layer of snow coated the 2.3 mile track on the morning of the scheduled April 6 race, forcing race director Stuart Higgs to call off the season opener.
The race will be rescheduled for May 11. Tickets for the originally scheduled event will be honored at the date. Riders will retain the starting positions they earned during this weekends qualifying sessions.
I am gutted for all the fans who have turned up today, says Shane Byrne of Airwaves Ducati, who secured the pole position. My aim was to get out there and win in my first race for the Airwaves Ducati team but unfortunately the Great British weather has turned on us and instead of racing we will be packing up and going home early.
Cal Crutchlow of HM Plant Honda, who qualified for second on the grid, commended the disappointed crowd that braved the weather to attend the race.
One thing I wanted to mention is the fans theyve been great and to turn out in this sort of number in these conditions is just awesome, says Crutchlow. So many of them are wearing helmets, so they have turned up on bikes too theyre a lot braver than I am!
The British Superbike championship season will restart April 18 at the Thruxton circuit, in Hampshire, weather permitting.
