Schumacher third in motorcycle race

F1 legend records race-best lap time
By Motorcycle.Com Staff, Mar. 24, 2008
Its rare that an obscure Hungarian motorcycle race featuring a field of mostly amateur racers gets the attention of racing fans around the world. Of course, its not every day that a field of amateurs includes a seven-time Formula One champion.

Michael Schumacher finished third in the SKOOX Cup on the Pannonia Ring in the small village of Ostffyasszonyfa, Hungary on March 20. Wearing a black helmet and orange overalls, Schumi rode a 2008 Honda CBR1000RR, recording a race-best fastest lap time of 2:01.309.

Schumacher participated in the race at the invitation of team Honda Holzhauer. Holzhauer was using the race to prepare for the German Internationale Deutsche Motorradmeisterschaft Superbike racing series. Defending IDM Superbike champion Martin Bauer and Andreas Meklau, both from team Holzhauer, finished first and second respectively.

The Pannonia Ring track, located near te Austria-Hungary border is a 4,740 m in length. It is a regular test site for Ducati.

This wasnt the first time Schumacher displayed his two-wheel racing prowess. In November 2007, the retired F1 legend rode the freshly-crowned MotoGP champion Casey Stoners 800cc Ducati Desmosedici around the track at Valencia. He impressed witnesses by finishing just five seconds off of the fastest lap time from the MotoGP season finale, held the day before on the same Spanish track.
