Preliminary 2011 AMA Pro Racing Schedule

AMA returning to MMP with WSBK
By Motorcycle.Com Staff, Dec. 09, 2010
AMA Pro Racing has released its preliminary calendar for the 2011 Road Racing season.

The preliminary calendar lists nine events, including one to be determined and a tenth under consideration. If the final schedule retains just the nine rounds it will mark the third season in a row that the calendar has fewer races than the preceding season, with 10 rounds held in 2010, 12 in 2009 and 13 in 2008.

Other big changes include the return of the Dayton 200 to a traditional daytime race and a return to Miller Motorsports Park where AMA Pro Racing will share the Tooele, Utah, circuit with the World Superbike Championship.

The last time AMA Superbikes raced at Miller Motorsports Park, Ben Spies scored the double for Suzuki.
The 2011 season is scheduled to begin March 10-12 at Daytona International Speedway. The Daytona 200 will again feature the AMA Sportbike class for the 70th running of the famed race. Daytona will also host two Superbike races and a Supersport race, and for the first time, a Harley-Davidson XR1200 series race.

The Miller Motorsports Park round will be held on May 28-30 for Memorial Day weekend. AMA Pro Racing previously held events at Miller Motorsports Park from 2006-2008 with 2008 being the only time it shared the circuit with the WSBK Championship. The 2008 event had both racing series running on different track configurations to avoid direct comparisons between the two. Its not known yet whether that will be the case in 2011.

AMA Pro Racing will join the MotoGP Championship at Laguna Seca in Monterey, Calif. on July 22-24 for the U.S. Grand Prix. The Laguna Seca round will only hold single races for the Superbike, Sportbike and Supersport rounds instead of the usual double.

New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville, N.J., is tentatively scheduled to end the season on Labor Day weekend, Sept. 3-5.

Absent from the provisional schedule are Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif., Road Atlanta in Braselton, Ga., and Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Ala. According to AMA Pro Racing, negotiations are currently underway with Barber Motorsports Park, possibly for a June date. Another round to be held after the New Jersey round is under consideration.
