Roads to Seek Out, Roads to Avoid

Anybody know if there's a source for finding out what roads are in good shape and what roads are so chewed up by truck traffic and such that they ought to be avoided? My wife and I are planning on heading from Milwaukee to Glacier Park this summer, and I was figuring on taking US 2 across Montana until I read an article in Motorcycle Consumer News about roads with pavement problems, and US 2 was specifically mentioned as being badly rutted in North Dakota and Montana. Is there any clearing house for pavement condition information?
