It was just about one week ago today that someone attacked a California Highway Patrol sergeant two miles east of Ronald W. Caspers Wilderness Park. And since the suspects are still at large, CHP officers staffed "informational" checkpoints on Ortega Highway near where the assult took place.

A CHP representative says the purpose of the checkpoints was to hand out composite sketches and descriptions ot the suspects, as well as ask for the public's assistance in identifying the suspects. An ABC news report stated...

"The assault is being investigated by the Orange County Sheriff's Department. Investigator Steve Doan said the suspects may be part of a sub- culture called 'canyonracers' who like to race through the canyons on the weekend. "

The officer who was attached suffered moderate head injuries and was taken to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo. He was released Monday, but is not expected to return to duty for about three weeks, according to the CHP.
