The Year 2001 Paris-Dakar rally has just got underway in Paris, France, with the racers making their way towards West Africa. There are 133 motorcycles, 113 cars, 30 race trucks and 82 support vehicles all heading to Senegal in 20 stages, covering 6,658 miles before the scheduled arrival Jan. 21.

Italy's Giovanni Sala and Spain's Juan Roma had the fastest times among motorcycles, a division won by France's Richard Sainct in the two previous rallies. Spain's Jose Maria Servia led the car group while France's Jean-Louis Schlesser was second, aiming for a third straight victory...

Last year's race was interrupted after a terrorist threat forced organizers to airlift the entire race from Niger to Libya. There have already been rumors of threats this year, though everything is still going as originally planned.
