How Did the ''Ton'' Come to Mean 100 MPH?

The term "ton-up" means breaking 100 mph in cafe-racer lingo, but how did the word "ton" come to represent the number 100?

As far as I've been able to find, a ton is not 100 of anything in either metric or U.S. measure.

So how did 100 mph come to be known as "the magic ton"?
