Another Bike Choice Question.

I recently received a phone call from a mechanic relative of mine who asked me a fairly simple question. "Do you want a project bike?" My gut reaction was, "Who doesn't?"
The project in question is a 1988 Vulcan 750. It needs front brakes, master cylinder, and a major tune-up. It may need more, but I haven't yet seen the bike. It has a custom paint job (partially ruined from a leaky fuel shut-off valve) and the front is supposedly raked out.
My question is . . . is it worth $500?
(I might add that my current bike is a 1985 Shadow 500)
