Electrical Issues

I have a 1983 Honda Shadow VT750C. I have recently replaced the battery (2 days ago as of the writing of this message) and it fired up and worked great for about an hour's worth of
riding. When I fired it up, after being off for about 5 hours, it started fine but after running for a few minutes it died - sounding like it was choking (seemed like a fuel issue). I turned the key off for about 10 minutes and tried again - it started. As I was riding down the road it started choking/sputtering again and as I was waiting at a light, it died and I had to push start it to get it going. That happened one more time within 20 minutes but when it died I was about 100 yards from home so I coasted. I had more than half a tank of gas and in light of the electrical issues I have been having, it has been suggested that it could be electrical.
Sorry for the lengthy message but is there anything you can think of that may help me, without seeing the bike?
Thanks very much in advance.
