PIAA to Sponsor Americade Functional Lighting Contest.

BEAVERTON, Ore. – It’ll be the Battle of the Bulbs. Lumen vs. lumen. Headlight vs. headlight. An epic struggle to crown the best and the brightest in motorcycle lighting.

Motorcycle owners with a keen appreciation of lighting will square off on June 7th in Americade Rally’s Functional Lighting Contest – sponsored for the first time by PIAA, a world leader in powersports and automotive lighting.

Americade is the largest multi-brand motorcycle touring rally in the world, drawing more than 50,000 attendees to the Adirondack resort town of Lake George, N.Y. the week of June 5-11. “We couldn’t resist,” explained PIAA Powersports Manager Gordon Robertson. “Once we looked over Americade’s list of events, the light went on, so to speak. It’s natural for PIAA, with our history of engineering the world’s best lighting products, to sponsor a lighting contest. The PIAA Functional Lighting Contest should be very competitive and fun for participants and spectators alike.”

The PIAA Functional Lighting Contest will take place on Wednesday evening at 9:30 p.m., with three categories of competition: Stock, for bikes with stock headlights using 55W bulbs plus up to two 55W auxiliary lights; Open Halogen, for any combination of halogen lamps and bulbs; and Open HID, for any combination of HID and Halogen lamps.

Contestants position the bike 50 feet away from a scoring panel punctuated by a random selection of small holes. A light meter is held behind the holes to determine brightness – measured in lumens – to determine the brightest lighting system. Winners will receive gift certificates for PIAA products from popular retailers.
